Uruguay 2 – 2 Cape Verde

Cape Verde continued their fairytale World Cup campaign as the African group of islands claimed a 2-2 draw with two-time winners Uruguay in Miami.

In a real contender for game of the tournament, Cape Verde were at it again in a brave display in the Group H game which saw them take the lead, fall behind – then rescue another point after some horror Uruguay defending.

Kevin Pina set the tone for their bravery by scoring a stunning long-range free-kick that went through the timid two-man Uruguay wall to send Cape Verde into more delirium.

But a second tournament goal for Maxi Araujo, who then set up Agustin Canobbio’s second seven minutes later, turned the game around just ahead of half-time.

Cape Verde were not deterred and levelled in comical fashion for Marcelo Bielsa’s side. Mathias Olivera’s poor square pass saw goalkeeper Fernando Muslera rush out of his goal. Substitute Helio Varela flicked the ball over his head and scored into an empty net.

Uruguay thought they had a winner as Araujo tapped home a scrappy effort but it was ruled out for an offside on the same player. Steven Moreira then made two goal-saving blocks to deny Brian Rodriguez and Rodrigo Bentancur from close range.

A thrilling finale saw Laros Duarte fire straight at the goalkeeper in a massive chance for Cape Verde to win it, before Varela was denied a second goal by a goal-saving challenge from Bentancur.

For Cape Verde, this result means they can go into their final game against Saudi Arabia confident that they can avoid defeat to take them into the round of 32. Uruguay likely need something from their final game against Spain to qualify…

The key moments from Miami…

  • 21: GOAL! Pina sends Cape Verde into delirium with a long-range free-kick that goes through the two-man wall.
  • 38: Cape Verde miss two quickfire opportunities – Lopes Cabral’s cross is well-saved by Muslera while Gilson Benchimol cannot pick out Telmo Arcanjo for a one on one on the break.
  • 44: GOAL! Seconds after Cape Verde try to score from halfway, Araujo levels with a close-range header.
  • 45+6: GOAL! Uruguay complete comeback as Canobbio flicks home Araujo’s header.
  • 61: GOAL! Uruguay then shoot themselves in the foot as Olivera’s square pass and Muslera’s wild charge out allows Varela to level.
  • 63: Jamiro Monteiro nearly turns the game around again as his long-range effort lands on the roof of the net.
  • 69: DISALLOWED! Uruguay think they have a scrappy third goal through Araujo but his heel is caught offside as a corner came back to him.
  • 90+3: Federico Valverde cannot slide in from Darwin Nunez’s cross, before Canobbio blazes over a one on one.
  • 90+5: Duarte nearly wins it for Cape Verde but fires straight at the goalkeeper, before Varela fails to convert big chance on break.

Analysis: What is going on with Bielsa’s Uruguay?

Sky Sports’ Sam Blitz:

From dark horses to deep disappointment. Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay were one of those teams tipped to go a long way given talent all over the pitch. Carry on playing like this and they are going home.

Image:
Uruguay have been a deep disappointment at this World Cup

After losing for most of their opener against World Cup opener against Saudi Arabia, before salvaging a late point, Uruguay were even worse against Cape Verde.

Their two goals were their only shots on target in the game. With 15 chances flying off target, they look like a team devoid of quality as much as confidence.

Yes, they are missing key players such as injured captain Jose Gimenez, defender Ronald Araujo, midfielder Giorgian de Arrascaeta while Luis Suarez was not picked – key, experienced players in the spine.

But their problems are bigger than that. There is a passion element to it as well. Just look at the two teams in terms of heart.

Cape Verde defended for their lives. Their two centre-backs made 28 clearances, left-back Sidny Lopes Cabral won 10 out of his 15 duels on a yellow card.

Uruguay’s two-man wall parted like papier mache for Kevin Pina’s free-kick goal, while their hospital pass defending for the second was diabolic at any level.

Image:
Cape Verde’s Helio Varela dribbles past Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera

But perhaps such lack of heart to be expected, given all the turmoil that Bielsa’s reign has provided in the last two years.

Generational talisman Suarez removed himself from international duty because Bielsa created a divisive and toxic environment, and the former Leeds boss returned the favour by snubbing the striker when he asked to come back for this tournament.

Part of the disrespect Suarez accused Bielsa of is putting Sunday’s goalscorer Augstin Canobbio with the Under-20s “sparring players” instead of the first team, as Bielsa did not like his attitude, including the way he sat down.

Bielsa is already set to leave the national team post at the end of the tournament but as the full-time whistle went, the cameras followed him down the tunnel. There is deep scrutiny after the two-time World Cup winners failed to beat Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde at a major tournament.

Will he even take charge of the game against Spain? Stranger things have happened.

What the result means…

‘I Couldn’t Feel My Leg’: Virgil Van Dijk Suffers Injury Scare In Win vs. Sweden

Netherlands secured a 5-1 victory over Sweden in their second World Cup group-stage match on Saturday night, but the triumph was clouded by significant fitness scares for Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool’s captain revealed a frightening moment during the clash where he temporarily lost feeling in his upper leg following a heavy blow to the hip.

A Frightening Nerve Scare

Despite Oranje delivering an absolute masterclass on the pitch to brush aside Sweden in a comprehensive 5-1 blowout, Van Dijk did not emerge from the intense battle completely unscathed, picking up a severe knock that sent a brief wave of panic through the Dutch technical staff.

Speaking directly to NOS after the final whistle, the Liverpool defender detailed the bizarre and alarming physical sensations he experienced immediately following a heavy collision.

“I took a hard hit to my hip and I couldn’t feel my upper leg anymore, so that was a little bit crazy,” Van Dijk explained, recounting the immediate aftermath of the challenge. “But it was probably just a pinched nerve.”

Van Dijk Downplays Injury Fears

The Oranje’s next match, against Tunisia, will see Van Dijk break the record to become the Netherlands captain with the most appearances at the World Cup.

Van Dijk is currently tied at seven World Cup matches as captain, alongside legendary figures Johan Cruyff, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Frank de Boer and Ruud Krol.

Despite the knock, he does not expect any major issues moving forward. He believes he will be able to simply join the training sessions in the coming days and be available for selection. “I think it is not too bad, but we will see shortly,” Van Dijk concluded.

Another Threat For The Oranje

Van Dijk’s scare was not the only medical concern troubling the Dutch camp, as midfield anchor Frenkie de Jong also faced uncertainty about whether he could even start the match.

The midfielder revealed that his fitness issues stemmed from an incident earlier in the week during team preparations.

“We had a collision at training, and I was also involved in that,” De Jong explained. “I had sustained some damage from it, but in the end, it was okay.”

Although De Jong managed to feature in Saturday’s victory, he admitted that he was far from pain-free during the game. He noted that he definitely felt pain during the match, though it was still manageable.

While it remains a question mark whether he will be able to train over the coming days, the midfielder remains optimistic about his recovery.

“We’re going to see what the reaction will be, but I have confidence in it,” De Jong concluded.

The Oranje Eye Top Spot

After a sluggish opening draw against Japan that drew criticism for coach Ronald Koeman, Netherlands bounced back with a devastating attacking display to dismantle Sweden.

Cody Gakpo spearheaded the emphatic victory by netting a brilliant brace, while Brian Brobbey also found the back of the net twice to put the Oranje completely out of sight.

Although Anthony Elanga pulled a goal back for Sweden, Crysencio Summerville put the final seal on a hugely impressive Dutch performance. Having effectively neutralized a Sweden side that previously thrashed Tunisia 5-1.

Koeman’s men are now firmly in the driving seat to win their group, needing just a victory over Tunisia in their final fixture to guarantee top spot.

US Open: Rory McIlroy admits Shinnecock Hills ‘won the battle’ after seeing major title hopes fade during frustrating weekend | Golf News

Rory McIlroy was left frustrated by seeing the “wheels come off” during the US Open, where a disappointing weekend display saw his major hopes ended at Shinnecock Hills.

McIlroy posted an opening-round 69 and was seven off the halfway lead after a one-over 71 on Friday, then raced within four of Wyndham Clark following three consecutive birdies during his third round.

The Masters champion spectacularly unravelled during the back nine on Saturday, carding five bogeys in a three-over 73, with any hopes of an eighth consecutive US Open top 20 ended by another frustrating final day.

McIlroy shot a three-over 73 in the third round, leaving him 10 strokes behind Wyndham Clark

McIlroy called for himself to “just go home” after a poor approach shot early on Sunday, when he bogeyed three of his first five holes and recorded his worst US Open finish since the tournament was last held at Shinnecock Hills in 2018.

I think it [Shinnecock Hills] won the battle over me at this point,” McIlroy said following his final-round 73, which saw him finish on six over. “I think looking back on the entire week, I’ll obviously rue the back-nine yesterday [Saturday].

McIlroy was visibly frustrated after hitting a poor approach to the third green at Shinnecock Hills, as he slipped further down the leaderboard

“I got myself to two under par for the tournament after nine yesterday, then the wheels came off and played a really bad back nine – I shot myself out of the tournament then.

“I was really disappointed coming away from the course last night. You try to come out here today positive and you try to muster up the energy to put a good one in there, but, after a couple of bogeys on the front nine, I was just trying to race my way to the 18th green.”

McIlroy made three birdies in a row at one stage during the third round

McIlroy was second last of the 72 players in approach play on the final day and 59th in strokes gained putting, with the six-time major champion struggling with his irons and on the greens to continue his tumble down the leaderboard.

“Today he just looked slightly lacklustre,” Sky Sports’ Andrew Coltart said on commentary. “A couple of years ago he would go out there in the majors and he’d struggle in the first round, play himself out of it, and then would back his way into a top five or something by fighting hard.”

Image:
Rory McIlroy was chasing a second major win of the season and first at the US Open since 2011

Former Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley added: “It has been a seesaw week for McIlroy. One step forward and two steps back has been the order of play for him all week long.

“As he has made a few birdies, he has followed it with mistakes.”

All eyes on The Open for McIlroy

McIlroy’s finish is his worst result since successfully defending his title at The Masters in April, with the Northern Irishman now set for a fortnight off after electing to skip next week’s Travelers Championship – the final Signature Event of the season.

He also missed the Cadillac Championship and the RBC Heritage this season, meaning he has made just 10 appearances in PGA Tour-sanctioned events in 2026 and played in only five of the eight Signature Events.

McIlroy will return to action at the Genesis Scottish Open on July 9-12, which he won in 2023 and finished runner-up to Chris Gotterup last year, ahead of featuring in The Open at Royal Birkdale the following week.

I’ll be playing some links golf this week probably coming up, but it’s my favourite time of the year to go back home and play The Open,” McIlroy added. “I get to spend a bit of time back there.

“This was not too dissimilar to an Open Championship in terms of how the golf course started to play over the weekend, but a bit of links golf over the next couple weeks will be nice.”

Zlatan: Lamine Yamal Has Something ‘Nobody Else Has’

Lamine Yamal has arrived on the FIFA World Cup stage.

Spain’s superstar winger, who turns 19 next month, scored a goal in the 10th minute of his country’s 4-0 Group H victory over Saudi Arabia on Sunday. It was Yamal’s first career World Cup goal in what was also his first World Cup start and second appearance in the tournament altogether.

Spain’s Lamine Yamal Scores His First Career FIFA World Cup™ Goal vs Saudi Arabia 🇪🇸

Yamal came off the bench in Spain’s shock June 15 draw against Cape Verde, as he was dealing with a hamstring injury. While he only played one half against Saudi Arabia for the same reason, it was all that Spain needed from him.

“The difference from the first game and today was, I would say, Yamal because he brings something that I think nobody else has, they creativity,” Zlatan Ibrahimović opined after Spain’s win. “He only played 45 minutes, but everybody knows that when you play against Spain, you have to watch out; they’re the European champions.”

But what is it that makes Yamal special?

“The creativity,” World Cup winner Thierry Henry said of Yamal, who plays at Barcelona just as Henry did. “He’s the sort of guy that thinks the game. He does things differently. He will attract different people, find different ways with his dribbling, passing and the aura that he has. He knows when to go and when not to go and stop the rhythm of the game sometimes, assisting goals.

“To talk about him, we know we’re talking about Spain today, obviously, but also at Barcelona, when he doesn’t play, it’s on the same team. When you have Lamine Yamal on your team, anything can happen.”

(Photo by Patrick Smith – FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images)

Yamal has spent the last four seasons playing for Barcelona in LaLiga, with whom he finished first in the league in three of those seasons (2022-23, 2024-25 and 2025-26). Last season (2025-26), Yamal totaled 16 goals, 11 assists and knocked through three penalty kicks, which were all career highs.

Prior to becoming a fixture for Barcelona, Yamal was part of La Masia, Barcelona’s youth academy, since 2014; Yamal ultimately made his debut for the club in April 2023, when he was just 15.

Next up for Yamal and Spain (1W-1D-0L) is a June 26 showdown against Uruguay (0W-1D-0L), which is both countries’ final match of the group stage.

Lucas Bergvall transfer news: Tottenham midfielder asks to leave Premier League club in search for first-team football | Football News

Sweden midfielder Lucas Bergvall has asked to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

The 20-year-old, who is currently with his country at the World Cup, has made the club aware of his wish to leave Spurs in search for a fresh start and concerns over regular first-team football.

Bergvall only played 112 minutes of football under Roberto De Zerbi, starting one of the Italian’s six games in charge and featuring mainly as a substitute.

He joined Spurs from Swedish club Djurgarden in the 2024 winter window and his contract runs until June 2031.

Before joining Spurs, Barcelona were interested in Bergvall but he chose Tottenham, despite holding talks with Deco.

Spurs are pushing for reinforcements in midfield, and had an £80m bid for Sandro Tonali rebuffed by Newcastle on Saturday.

De Zerbi’s plans to rebuild Spurs

Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge:

Never again. That was the promise made by Tottenham chief executive Vinai Venkatesham and non-executive chairman Peter Charrington after narrowly avoiding relegation from the Premier League.

There was a lot of criticism aimed at the Spurs board and sporting director Johan Lange after a disappointing January transfer window which left the team looking slim. It looked even more slim when the injuries started to pile up.

The promise from the Spurs hierarchy is that they are going to be stronger and they are going to back Roberto De Zerbi, who they have wanted to bring to the club for a long time. Even Daniel Levy, who left as former executive chairman a year ago, wanted to hire De Zerbi.

Now they’ve finally got him, and after he pulled off the miracle of keeping Spurs up, they want to back him by signing the players he wants. Jan Paul van Hecke, who De Zerbi worked with at Brighton, has already been brought in for £52m.

The Favorite

Alex Palou is the clear favorite heading into Road America. On the season, the reigning INDYCAR champion has four wins, five poles and sits first in the standings with 342 points. He won this race in 2025 after leading only six laps. Even with his disastrous finish two weeks ago at Gateway, he’s still sitting first in Bob Pockrass’s most recent power rankings.

One To Watch

Kyle Kirkwood is certainly one to watch at Road America, as he sits second in the standings behind Alex Palou. In fact, he’s only 49 points away from the champ for first place. While he hasn’t earned any poles in 2026, he does have one win under his belt, which was the inaugural Grand Prix of Arlington back in March. At Road America last year, he barely missed the podium, finishing fourth behind Palou, Rosenqvist and Ferrucci.

Jack Draper boosted by coach Andy Murray ahead of Wimbledon: ‘He believes in me and my tennis’ | Tennis News

“He believes in me and my tennis” – Jack Draper has revealed he has received a big boost from his new coach Andy Murray ahead of Wimbledon.

The former British No 1 prepares to return to tennis action at the Eastbourne Open on Monday when he tackles American Brandon Nakashima, who made it as far as the semi-finals at Queen’s before losing to eventual champion Francisco Cerundolo.

Draper has been hampered by injuries since the US Open last August, with a knee problem causing his latest stint on the sidelines since April.

But he returns on the grass of Eastbourne one week before Wimbledon starts with Murray, a two-time champion at the All England Club, as part of his coaching set-up for the first time in competition.

Draper revealed that Murray had helped him focus on the longer-term picture amid his fight to regain fitness.

“He [Murray] has always supported me,” said Draper. “I’ve always had a great relationship with Andy. We spent some time together towards the back end of his career and he’s been a great support to me every since he has stopped as well, but it felt like a really good time to get Andy in my team. I’ve always wanted that because he’s one of my biggest inspirations.

“To have him there in my coaching team, not only as a coach, but a mentor as somebody who has been through it all, which is a special thing. But also the fact that he believes in me, believes in my tennis – especially in this moment now which is to come back and build myself up again. It gives me a big boost!”

What are Draper’s recent results?

Tim Henman and Laura Robson discuss Murray joining Draper’s coaching team

Murray has delivered glowing praise of Draper’s ability, hailing his tennis as “b****y good”.

“I was thinking to myself, ‘I was like No 4 in the world’. I think I was always pretty good,” Draper jested. “Hearing that from Andy means on another level, so he’s a special, special person, not only as a person, but also his tennis knowledge. If he’s saying that about you, then there’s no one who you can get more confidence from than him.

“To know someone who has dealt with all the things that you have gone through such as injuries, or pressure moments, or how to deal with certain situations, he really does bring to me so many different things and he delivers it in such a calm way and in a way that is very helpful. He’s very honest but also very calm. He has a very good influence on me.”

Draper, who has endured an injury-stricken 12 months and has only played nine matches in 2026, said: “I’m so happy to be back at a tournament. It’s been way too long. My body is feeling good. It’s been a tough time doing rehab and not be able to get on the match court but to come back at a tournament like Eastbourne is great so I’m really happy.

“I always saw injuries as being a one-to-two-week thing, so when you have a big one, you do lose a lot of confidence in your body and doing the thing that you’ve always been able to do.

“You can go from doing anything to then really struggling just to move without pain or something like that, so you have to work yourself through it. And luckily I’ve had some really amazing people around to help guide me and tell me, ‘Jack, it’s going to be alright, you’ll get out there’ and it’s nice to be back.”

Murray explained in an interview with The Sun how the coaching partnership with Draper could extend beyond Wimbledon, but only on certain terms around his own family life.

He said: “I get to spend a decent amount of time with Jack. I also believe a lot in his tennis. In the sessions I’ve done with him, I’ve been more impressed probably than what I expected and I thought he was good before I started helping him. He’s a quick learner. He’s got very few holes in his game. He’s a more complete player than probably what I expected as well.

“I really like Jack, and I wanted to help him when he asked if I could. But I was quite clear about what I could and couldn’t do. I still want to be able to pick my kids up from school, drop them off at home – he’s asked for me to help him over this next period. I’ve enjoyed being on court with him. We’ll see how the next few weeks pan out.”

Chris ‘The Bear’ Fallica’s World Cup Best Bets Today — Match Day 12

“Bear Bets” are real wagers that Chris “The Bear” Fallica is actually making.

The last time Kylian Mbappé, Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland took the pitch on the same day during this World Cup, they scored a combined seven goals.

Will the superstar trio do it again?

Here is what I’m eyeing ahead of Match Day 12.

World Cup Best Bets — Monday, June 22

Argentina vs. Austria

Lionel Messi was dominant in Argentina’s World Cup opener (Getty Images).

The Austria scoreline vs. Jordan looked convincing at 3-1, but included in that is an own goal and a 90+12 penalty. It will have to be much better against Argentina’s defense to generate chances. Lionel Messi had his magical hat trick vs. Algeria, but Argentina really didn’t do much on offense either. For the xG crowd, Argentina had just 1.3 xG for the match, which tells how insanely good Messi’s goals were. This match should be a grind.

Fallica’s Picks:   Both Teams to Score — No (-120), 1st Half Draw (+135)

France vs. Iraq

France was very quiet for the first 45 minutes vs. Senegal; then a tactical tweak moving Michael Olise to the middle made all the difference. Iraq couldn’t defend against Norway, allowing 11 shots from inside the penalty area, and I would expect a similar, if not worse, struggle here.

Fallica’s Picks:   France -2.5 (-130), France 1st Half Team Total Over 1.5 (+115)

Norway vs. Senegal

Does a second brace await Erling Haaland against Senegal (Getty Images)?

Norway looked great in attack vs. an overmatched Iraq side, but Senegal will offer a stiffer test, even as one of the older teams in the competition. Reports of disputes between the players, staff and the confederation, along with accommodation issues have me a little concerned, but that could also result in motivating the Lions of Teranga to show everyone that they still have immense pride in playing for themselves and their fans. I’m not going to go too crazy here.

Fallica’s Pick:   Both Teams to Score — Yes (-135)

Jordan vs. Algeria

Both lost their openers by multiple goals, so each needs all three points here to boost their chances of being one of the third-place teams to advance. The duo combined for 0.8 xG in their openers, so I’m not sure if we’re gonna see much in the way of excitement here, even with both teams needing a win. I really don’t know what to do here, but I believe Algeria is better.

Fallica’s Pick:   Algeria Win to Nil (+140)

Brendon McCullum insists England captain Ben Stokes has not tarnished their relationship with nightclub incident | Cricket News

Brendon McCullum insists Ben Stokes’ actions have not impacted their working relationship as England’s head coach prepares to welcome his captain back for the third Test against New Zealand.

McCullum confirmed Stokes will return as captain for the series decider at Trent Bridge following a week-long exile in the wake of a nightclub incident involving Gus Atkinson during a team curfew breach.

Asked whether the incident had tarnished relations, McCullum told reporters: “I’ve said all the way along we’ve worked together intimately for four years. We’ve achieved some cool things and we’ve let ourselves down on other things.

“Our motivation, our belief and our vision for this side have not wavered. We still want to make the England cricket team the best possible and to have long-term, sustainable success.

“We have robust conversations all the time and I think that’s to be expected when you’re in positions of leadership.

“There’s a mutual respect in how we operate and, normally, we’re able to navigate through those conversations and maintain a collaborative approach.

Nasser Hussain and Michael Atherton discuss the mixed messages around Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum’s relationship after England’s chaotic week at The Oval.

“It’s really important to separate the actions from the man. As leaders, we help set standards and try to abide by them constantly. Occasionally there will be mistakes. You address them and then move on.

“I’ve been very clear and very supportive of Ben, particularly this week. I anticipate we’ll be able to work together really well moving forward. I’m sure we still share the same vision for this team.”

It is understood the investigation into the nightclub incident – involving a member of England’s security staff and a Saracens player – which led to Stokes and Atkinson being dropped for the second Test, is not yet complete.

Highlights from day five of the second Test between England and New Zealand.

Despite this, Stokes and Atkinson were withdrawn from the remainder of their respective County Championship matches for Durham and Surrey early on Sunday, in a clear indication both will return at Trent Bridge.

England are in desperate need of reinforcements after shortcomings with bat, ball and experience saw them slump to a 253-run defeat at The Oval as New Zealand levelled the three-match series.

Stokes struck 95 off 118 balls for Durham against Northamptonshire on Saturday and McCullum, who expressed his “worry” when news of the incident involving the England captain broke, welcomed his return to form.

Brendon McCullum raised his concerns about Ben Stokes when asked if he would remain as England captain.

“Ben will be back and he will be captain,” he added. “Everyone is excited about that, especially after seeing him hit some form with Durham.

“My view on that has not changed. I’ve been speaking to Ben every single day since the incident and my assessment was that I was worried about him.

“But to see him go out there, play some cricket and enjoy himself was really positive. It is great to see him back playing and I look forward to seeing him in a few days.”

Broad: Stokes will apologise for Oval defeat

Sky Sports’ Stuart Broad says that Englands loss in their second test to New Zealand will hurt Ben Stokes as he will know ‘this result is a result of his actions’.

Sky Sports Cricket’s Stuart Broad says Ben Stokes will have taken responsibility for England’s defeat in his absence and will be eager to atone on his return.

“New Zealand’s 253-run win will hurt Stokes. He’ll be feeling a lot of pain from this result as he knows it stems from his actions,” he said.

“I’m sure he has spoken to most of the squad, although he hasn’t said anything of note publicly. There will likely be a face-to-face apology, and then they will move on.

“He needs to say sorry, admit it was a mistake, and then focus on winning the series, because next week’s result is crucial.

“If England lose the series 2-1, there will be a huge number of questions asked.”

Uruguay vs. Cape Verde Prediction, Odds, Picks For World Cup Match

Uruguay will face Cape Verde in their second Group H match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on June 21, 2026, at Miami Stadium on FS1.

This fixture marks the first-ever senior international meeting between these two nations.

Cape Verde pulled off one of the great World Cup surprises in its World Cup debut, forcing a draw against the reigning European champion Spain 0-0.

The Blue Sharks were the only one of this tournament’s four debutants to get a point in the first set of group games, and they’re the first team to post a shutout in its World Cup debut since 2006.

40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha was Cape Verde’s hero, making seven saves to keep Cape Verde’s clean sheet.

Meanwhile, Uruguay drew its opener 1-1 against Saudi Arabia, but the match was a tail of two halves.

In the first half, Uruguay had 58% possession, and shots were even at five apiece. In the second half, Uruguay had 75% possession and outshot Saudi Arabia 22-2. La Celeste’s 22 second-half shots tied a World Cup record.

Uruguay will look to carry that second half momentum into its second half of the tournament.

Uruguay vs. Cape Verde Prediction, Pick

From FOX Sports Wagering Analyst, Chris ‘The Bear’ Fallica:

  • It was a miraculous effort last match from Cape Verde, managing a 0-0 draw with Spain, despite having just 26% possession. It was a defensive masterpiece, as the team committed just one foul and goalkeeper Vozinha made seven key saves. This likely creates a bit of a discount on Uruguay, which looked dreadful in the first half against Saudi Arabia but subbed off Darwin Núñez in the second half and moved Federico Vinas further upfield. The result was 22 second-half shots, 75% possession and a completely different looking side. Uruguay probably deserved all three points, but didn’t get them. It will get all three here and look for Vinas to play a key role. Take Uruguay -1.5.
