Positive Reviews

“Bonuses and promotions are good with clear rules and obvious expiration dates, and are easy to apply on a wager. Synchronization with the broader MGM rewards program is seamless and easy to track.”

Negative Reviews

“I placed 4 bets and when I submitted my wagers it glitched and error out. So I logged out, got back in and again another error. Waited a few seconds finally was able to submit my bets. A few hrs later I login to check my bets and to my surprise I see 12 bets pending and live. It was the exact same bets I place earlier but 3x. Why would I submit the same duplicate bets multiple times vs just once.”

As one of the leading sports betting apps in the state, BetMGM is constantly pushing the envelope with new features and innovations to give users more tools and a better experience.

The Edit My Bet feature lets you adjust open wagers by adding, swapping, or removing legs. If you like betting on parlays, this feature can help save your skin on more than one occasion.

BetMGM also posts a variety of special props tied to major events.

They cater to both the players that can afford to make large bets and those of us at the other end that stick to a budget and make significantly smaller bets. Hence the $5 deposit minimum. (Love that feature).

Then there’s the almost instantaneous withdrawal wait. The ease to switch between deposit methods. I could go on and on.”

Negative Reviews

“This app is good if you plan on never ever reaching customer service or having any issues with the app. However if you ever need to reach customer service there is a huge issue. There is no phone number so you have to email them. Takes 1-5 days for them to answer or they ignore you.”

Sportsbook Apps vs Online Sports Betting Sites: Which is Best for Your Needs?

Every sportsbook on this list offers both a desktop site and a mobile app, with the exception of Fanatics, which is currently app-only. Choosing between the two largely comes down to personal preference and how you like to bet. Odds, markets, and promotions are identical across platforms, so whether you prefer the convenience of betting on your phone or the expanded view of a desktop browser, you’ll get the same core experience either way.

Sportsbook Apps Benefits

Sportsbook apps give bettors the flexibility to wager anytime, anywhere, without being tied to a computer. They’re built for speed and convenience, making it easy to place bets on the go or react quickly during games. Live betting is fully integrated into most apps, allowing for fast, in-game wagers as odds shift in real time. Push notifications keep users updated on bet results, new promotions, and odds boosts, ensuring you never miss a key opportunity.

Betting Site Benefits

Online betting sites are ideal for research-heavy bettors who prefer a more detailed, multi-window setup. Using a desktop allows you to compare odds, check stats, and track multiple games simultaneously without switching screens. There’s no need to download an app or use storage space, and the lack of push notifications means fewer distractions or impulsive betting prompts, making it easier to stay focused and deliberate with your wagers.

Sportsbook Apps & Betting Sites FAQ

Can I sign up for multiple sports betting apps at once?

  • Yes. In fact, signing up for multiple sportsbooks is common and often recommended. It allows you to claim several welcome bonuses, compare odds between operators, and take advantage of different promotions.

What is the #1 sports betting app?

  • The answer depends on what you value most. DraftKings is often considered the most well-rounded overall, while FanDuel leads in NBA betting, bet365 shines for soccer, and Caesars is popular for profit boost promos.

Do sports betting apps pay real money?

  • Yes. Licensed sportsbooks pay out real money winnings to your chosen withdrawal method. You can withdraw profits using options like PayPal, bank transfers, Play+ cards, or other supported methods.

What is the best sports betting app to make money?

  • No app guarantees profits, but choosing sportsbooks with consistently competitive odds, frequent boosts, and a wide range of markets (such as DraftKings, FanDuel, or bet365) can give you more opportunities to find value.

Is there a difference between sportsbook apps and their betting sites?

  • Functionally, no. Odds, markets, and promotions are identical. The main difference comes down to personal preference: apps offer more mobility and push notifications, while sites provide a larger layout for research and multi-window use.

Can I make sports bets if I’m in another state?

  • You can only place bets while physically located in a state where the sportsbook is licensed and legal. Sportsbooks use geo-location technology to verify your location before accepting wagers.

4 Takeaways From Paraguay’s Win That Knocked Türkiye Out Of World Cup

In a game between two desperate teams that each lost their opener at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Paraguay defeated Türkiye 1-0 at San Francisco Bay Stadium. With the result, Paraguay kept its hopes of advancing alive into its group finale against Australia.

Meanwhile, Türkiye is now disqaulified from advancing after two group stage games that are hard to comprehend. Türkiye dominated possession and shots each time, but could not even score a goal. In this game, Paraguay had to play the entire second half with just 10 men.

Türkiye will now play for pride in its finale against the United States while Paraguay will take on Australia with the winner guaranteed a spot in the round of 32.

With the result, the United States won Group D. Here are my takeaways:

4. Galarza Strike Set The Tone

After just 64 seconds, Paraguay took the lead on a stunning strike from Matías Galarza, who currently plays for Atlanta United in MLS. Galarza did not even get into the game for Paraguay in its opening 4-1 loss to the United States, but head coach Gustavo Alfaro needed to shake things up.

In a game where both teams needed to be aggressive from the start, Galarza set the tone for the entire game with a low shot from outside the box that beat Türkiye goalkeeper Ugurcan Çakir. It was a great play from Galarza as it appeared as if he was going to make a pass into the box only to look up and see a clear shot which he took. It was the quickest goal scored at this World Cup, so far.

From there, it demanded Türkiye step up and become aggressive with a very high line and relentless pressure. It also sent Paraguay into an even more defensive mindset, and it was Paraguay who then wanted to turn the game into a grind.

That is largely how it continued to play out. Türkiye dominated possession and chances but again, as it did against Australia, it could not generate enough dangerous chances. The closest it came in the first half was when captain Hakan Çalhanoğlu lofted a free kick into the box, which found Mert Müldür, whose header hit the crossbar and then the post on a single shot.

Paraguay was occasionally able to launch counterattacks through long balls that tested Türkiye’s high line, but those changes were few and far between.

3. Almiron’s Red Card

One of the most important moments in the game occurred in first half stoppage time when veteran Paraguay midfielder Miguel Almiron covered his mouth to say something to Müldür. Immediately afterward, Müldür went to the referee to indicate Almiron covered his mouth to say something.

This is a new rule from FIFA and players were all informed about it prior to the tournament. Players were not allowed to say something to an opposing player while covering his mouth. Referee Iván Barton of El Salvador then went to the VAR monitor and immediately sent Almiron off. It made for a highly consequential night for Atlanta United players with Galarza’s goal and Almiron’s red card.

This rule is new to many players and many fans, but Almiron had no excuse for this incident as all players were informed, and his violation was clear as could be.

Almiron is one of the most experienced players on Paraguay’s team with 77 caps and years in the Premier League. In a must-win game against a talented opponent, Almiron put his team into a terrible position and a player with such an extensive history in the game should have known better.

2. Türkiye’s Ineptitude, Paraguay’s Defending

(Photo by Bob Kupbens/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)

In Türkiye’s opening 2-0 loss to Australia, the statistics were stunning in how it pointed to Türkiye’s inability to turn possession into dangerous chances.

In that game, Türkiye had a 72-28% possession edge while out-shooting Australia 30-9. Türkiye had a 51-18 edge in touches inside the opposing box. Even with these numbers, Türkiye was not able to find the back of the net.

Against Paraguay, the statistics were even more lopsided, especially against an opponent that was down to 10 men.

When this World Cup is over and the analysts breakdown the top stories that came from this tournament, Türkiye’s offensive ineptitude is sure to be near the top. It is hard to find a team that dominated its first two games to this extent, had chance after chance (including for a half against a team with 10 men), that lost both games without scoring a goal.

The statistics were almost hard to believe. 63 shots across two games, and no goals.

Heading into this tournament, there were high expectations that Türkiye could make a run in the knockouts. This was the team’s first appearance in the tournament since 2002 when it finished third. This generation of Turkish players has shown a lot of promise but now will exit in stunning fashion.

On the flip side, Paraguay defending for almost the entire 90 minutes was remarkable. Even before Almiron was sent off, Paraguay was pinned back. But in the second half, Paraguay held firm through a disciplined approach with committed team defense and a first-rate effort that required a lot of character. At times Paraguay got lucky and at times Orlando Gill made a big save.

Paraguay’s World Cup hopes depended entirely on defensive effort for nearly an entire game. Against a lot of odds, they held firm and deserved the win.

1. Group D Finales

With this result, Türkiye is now disqualified from advancing to the knockout stage. That does not mean this is not a very talented team. Its young players are elite. Arda Güler is one of the best young players in the world and Kenan Yildiz, 21, has been impressive for Juventus. But this will be a bitter pill and an experience full of lessons to learn.

Türkiye still has one more game to play at the World Cup next week against the United States. That game matters nothing in the standings, but it will be interesting to see the pride Türkiye plays in that game. It will be important for its future to play hard and leave with an effort that can restore pride in the team.

Meanwhile, Paraguay and Australia will meet up in a dramatic game where the winner finishes second and advances. The loser, meanwhile, is in jeopardy of going home.

Brazil 3 – 0 Haiti

Matheus Cunha kick-started Brazil’s World Cup campaign by scoring twice in a comfortable 3-0 victory over Haiti in Group C.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side needed a response after drawing with Morocco in their opening match and his decision to drop Brentford striker Igor Thiago for Manchester United forward Cunha paid off in Philadelphia.

Cunha forced in a deserved opener in the 23rd minute, turning home a rebound from Vinicius Junior’s saved effort although the forward was fortunate the goal stood after accidentally kicking defender Hannes Delcroix as he deflected the ball over the line.

But there could be no doubts over Cunha’s second strike that he superbly smashed in high at the near post with his left foot as he fell away off balance before Vinicius Jr rolled in a third during stoppage time to cap Brazil’s impressive first-half performance.

The only negative for Brazil was winger Raphinha being forced off in the 40th minute with an apparent hamstring injury. The Barcelona forward later had an ice pack strapped to the back of his right leg.

Bournemouth’s Rayan replaced Raphinha, with Neymar still yet to return from a calf problem, while teenager Endrick made his World Cup debut in the second half, having a goal ruled out for offside as Brazil eased off.

Brazil’s victory puts them top of Group C on goal difference although top spot is wide open heading into the final round of fixtures on Wednesday when they face Scotland, who were beaten by Morocco on Tuesday. Haiti’s second defeat meant they became the first country to be eliminated.

The key moments from Philadelphia…

  • 23: GOAL! Cunha forces in a deserved opener from close range after Vinicius Jr’s shot is saved.

  • 36: GOAL! Cunha strikes again, smashing in a brilliant left-footed shot high into the net at the near post.

  • 40: RAPHINHA INJURED! The winger looks worried as he is forced off with a possible hamstring injury.

  • 45+3: GOAL! Vinicius Jr slots in his second goal of the World Cup and Brazil’s third before half-time.

  • 64: ENDRICK ON! The Brazilian teenager comes off the bench to make his World Cup debut.

  • 78: OFFSIDE! Endrick has a goal ruled out after being played in by Rayan.

Surfin’ USA!

Cunha pulled out his trademark celebration – twice!

Ancelotti delivers but issues still to solve

Sky Sports’ David Richardson:

Did anyone ever doubt Carlo Ancelotti? Brazil were under pressure to deliver after a poor showing against Morocco and the iconic manager’s big decision paid off.

Starting Cunha over Thiago meant Brazil had a fluid frontline as their makeshift striker was able to drop deeper and interchange with Vinicius Jr and Raphinha to unlock the five-man Haiti defence, who didn’t help themselves by playing too high.

The pace of the front three exposed the space in behind to earn a routine win, although much tougher tests lie in wait, with the 78-place gap between the two countries being the biggest in this year’s group stages.

There were still some worrying statistics for Ancelotti. Brazil’s eight shots were the joint-fourth fewest since 1966 by any team to score at least three goals in a World Cup fixture and only two were in the second half, their joint-lowest figure on record after half time.

Raphinha’s injury also presents a new problem for a team that, at 30 years and 190 days, was their oldest starting XI at a World Cup match since 1962. Ancelotti introduced Rayan and Endrick from the bench and may now be forced to give the kids a start.

What the result means…

Mauricio Pochettino Compares USA’s Fans To Argentina’s After Win In Seattle

U.S. men’s national team manager Mauricio Pochettino certainly feels the love of coaching one of the host nations at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. And not only does he appreciate it, but Pochettino also made a pretty bold claim about the American fans.

Moments after the USA’s 2-0 win over Australia at Seattle Stadium on Friday, Pochettino compared the team’s fans to one of the top fan bases in international soccer.

“Amazing. I was just saying yesterday Argentina have amazing fans, but I think we are matching Argentina,” Pochettino told FOX Sports’ Jenny Taft. “It’s amazing, our fans. So happy for them.”

The Stars and Stripes certainly gave plenty of reasons for the fans in Seattle to be loud and happy, but they were rambunctious in a way that was pretty unique. The seismic recording following Alex Freeman’s goal showed that the fans at Seattle Stadium caused the ground to shake as the Americans took a 2-0 advantage.

That goal helped seal the win for the USA, which in turn helped it secure a spot in the round of 32. As the match went final, the crowd at Seattle Stadium began to sing “Take Me Home, Country Roads” — and the team joined in on the performance.

That wasn’t the only way the fans showed their appreciation for the team, either. The crowd serenaded Pochettino with chants of his name, and he appeared to hold back some emotions during the moment.

“Even if I’m not American, after the game, I was emotional because the atmosphere was amazing. The fans were amazing,” Pochettino told reporters. “The warm reception and the way they support us and celebrate everybody. They make it feel very emotional. And the players, they were very emotional, too. I think it was an amazing and perfect connection and energy from this town and the team. They make us very proud.

“I think connecting with the people is what we wanted. If we want to achieve good things, we need the support from our fans. Fans here in Seattle, and in the rest of the country, are supporting us and we feel that support. That’s amazing for the team.”

Beyond Friday’s match, Seattle has been pretty synonymous with loud environments over the years as well. In 2011, the crowd in Seattle made so much noise when Marshawn Lynch rushed for a game-sealing touchdown in the Seahawks’ playoff win over the New Orleans Saints that it registered a small tremor. Something similar happened with the Seahawks this past postseason, with the crowd noise from Rashid Shaheed’s kickoff return touchdown against the San Francisco 49ers in the divisional round also registering on the scale.

Every Stat That Will Make You Believe In The USA After Win vs. Australia

Zlatan Ibrahimović was ready to tell fans of the U.S. men’s national team that it was time to believe following its 4-1 win over Paraguay to open the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He’s doubling down on that stance following the USA’s 2-0 win over Australia on Friday.

Following the USA’s second victory in Group D, Ibrahimović proclaimed that the Stars and Stripes can win the World Cup as they advanced to the round of 32.

“They had a good performance today. [U.S. manager Mauricio] Pochettino did good putting two strikers [in the lineup],” Ibrahimović said. “If you didn’t believe before, I will repeat: Start believing. They have the country behind them, and when you have this support, it’s difficult to beat you. They just need to continue, bring confidence game to game.”

Thierry Henry co-signed that sentiment, praising Pochettino’s approach.

“Mauricio Pochettino said, ‘If you want to win the competition.’ Before, he would’ve said, ‘How far can we go?’ He said, ‘If you want to win the competition,'” Henry said, believing it shows a positive change of mindset. “Things have changed.”

Pochettino’s tactics and confidence have helped the USA move just a point away from securing first place in Group D. If Paraguay wins or draws against Türkiye later on Friday, or if the USA wins or draws against Türkiye on Thursday, the USA will win the group.

But are Ibrahimović and Henry correct in their assessments that the USA can make a deep run in the World Cup? Here are some stats to help make you believe.

2: The USA won two straight men’s World Cup matches for the second time and the first since its first two matches ever in the tournament in 1930.

2: This is also just the second time the U.S. has won two group stage matches in a single World Cup (1930).

2: The USA became the first team in World Cup history to benefit from an own goal in two consecutive matches.

2: This was the first time in the modern era (since 1990) that USA has benefited from an own goal in consecutive games (all competitions). There have also already been seven own goals scored at the 2026 World Cup; only the 2018 edition has seen more scored (12).

15: USA is the second World Cup host nation to score a goal in the opening 15 minutes of each of its first two matches of that year’s competition, joining France in 1938 (per OPTA). The own goal, which came off a cross from USA striker Florian Balogun, came in the 11th minute.

6: The six goals the USA has scored in this group stage are already tied for the most the team has scored in a group stage in a World Cup ever (six in 1930).

2: Friday was the first time the U.S. has led by multiple goals in consecutive World Cup matches since 1930 and just the fourth time ever.

7: USA improves to 7-0-0 (W-D-L) all-time when playing in Seattle Stadium. The USA is now 10-1-1 (W-D-L) at all venues in Seattle, with the only loss coming vs. USSR in a 1979 friendly in the Kingdome. If the USA wins Group D, it will play at Seattle Stadium if it advances to the round of 16.

11: One key to victory for the USA? Score first. The USA improved to 11-2-1 (W-D-L) all-time at the World Cup when scoring first, and 10-2-1 (W-D-L) all-time at the World Cup when leading at half.

3: USA improves to 2-1-1 (W-D-L) all-time at the World Cup against AFC opponents; USA improves to 3-1-1 (W-D-L) against Australia.

44: Star midfielder Christian Pulisic didn’t play in Friday’s win. The U.S. is now 44-16-15 (W-D-L) when he does not play and 45-16-26 (W-D-L) when he does play.

3: Alex Freeman scored his third career international goal and first at a World Cup.

USA ADVANCES🚨🇺🇸 FIFA World Cup Now reacts to USA’s 2-0 win over Australia ⚽️

16: U.S. men’s national team manager Mauricio Pochettino improves to 16-2-10 (W-D-L) since taking over in September 2024.

8: The USA’s last eight men’s World Cup goals (excluding own goals) have been scored by players younger than 25 years old, equaling the longest such streak in World Cup history (Poland, eight straight between 1938 and 1974) (per OPTA).

97.8: Chris Richards has completed 97.8% of his passes at the FIFA World Cup (175/179); that is the second-best accuracy by a player in their first two appearances on record since 1966 (min. 100 passes), behind Gheorghe Popescu in 1994 (122/124 – 98.4%, per OPTA).

18: Weston McKennie had the most chances created (three) and the most passes ending in the final third (18) against Australia.

Leinster 36 – 7 Bulls

Leinster retain URC title with 36-7 victory over Bulls at Croke Park; Tommy O’Brien, Rieko Ioane, Jack Conan, Sam Prendergast and Harry Byrne score tries with fly-half Prendergast producing a man-of-the-match performance; Ireland pair Caelan Doris and O’Brien forced off with injuries

Last Updated: 19/06/26 11:30pm

Leinster captain Caelan Doris and departing duo Luke McGrath and James Lowe lift the URC trophy

Leinster demolished the Bulls 36-7 to retain their United Rugby Championship title but the victory could have repercussions for Ireland after Caelan Doris and Tommy O’Brien sustained injuries.

It was a familiar scenario with the repeat of the 2025 final delivering an even more emphatic outcome as the Springbok-packed Bulls were routed at Croke Park.

O’Brien, Rieko Ioane, Jack Conan, Sam Prendergast and Harry Byrne ran in tries as Leinster were crowned champions for the 10th time, going some way to healing the wound of their Heineken Champions Cup final rout by Bordeaux-Begles last month.

It was a fitting farewell for wing James Lowe, who bowed out in his final appearance for the province he has served with distinction for nine years, while Sam Prendergast and Josh van der Flier produced eye-catching performances.

The only cloud over the evening was the first-half departures of Doris and O’Brien after they limped off to cause concern ahead of Ireland’s Nations Championship opener against Australia in Sydney on July 4.

The Bulls have lost in four of the last five finals and their problems in this latest defeat began after just 82 seconds when Canan Moodie was shown a yellow card for a deliberate knock-on and the points avalanche started.

While Doris was unsuccessfully trying to run off his injury, O’Brien pounced on a dropped ball by Handre Pollard, hacked on and touched down.

Live Super Rugby

June 20, 2026, 8:00am

Live on

Moodie’s dismal afternoon continued when he slipped as Leinster launched a lineout move, allowing Hugo Keenan to race clear with Ioane in support to finish with a sharp step inside.

It then became Willie le Roux’s turn to visit the sin bin for another deliberate knock-on and moments later Conan, who had replaced Doris, muscled over from close range for his fourth try in four URC finals.

Twitter Due to your consent preferences, you’re not able to view this Privacy Options

Man of the match Prendergast then rifled over a penalty to stretch the lead to 22-0 and although O’Brien joined Doris in limping off, there was no let up in intensity from Leinster as they struck again through their fly-half.

Lowe became the latest player to be shown a yellow card for a deliberate knock-on and there were signs that the Bulls, aided by reinforcements from the bench, were starting to stir as Marcell Coetzee made a powerful run and then Moodie crossed.

The uprising was soon crushed, however, when Byrne finished off good work from his pack to complete Leinster’s resounding victory.

SEATTLE STADIUM — No Christian Pulisic? No problem.

With the U.S. men’s national team’s best attacking player on the bench because of a lingering calf injury, Mauricio Pochettino’s squad qualified for the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a game to spare by beating Australia 2-0 in their second group stage match in front of a raucous home crowd in what many consider the best soccer city in America.

For the second time in as many games, the U.S. struck first on an own goal to take a lead they would never relinquish. Defender Alex Freeman added the backbreaking second just before halftime; his third career U.S. goal was confirmed following a lengthy video review that reversed the call on the field; the assistant referee had initially ruled that Freeman was offside.

Down by two, the Aussies poured on the pressure in the second half. But while the U.S. bent, it didn’t break, with the home team securing their first shutout in 11 games — an encouraging sign for the tougher tests that await them in the weeks to come.

Here are four quick takeaways following Friday’s victory.

1. USA Makes History By Advancing

For any World Cup participant, no matter how successful historically, the first goal is obvious: survive and advance to the second, win-or-go-home round, and then take things game by do-or-die game from there. Plenty of soccer’s elite teams have failed this test. Take Germany, which was eliminated in group play in each of the last two editions of soccer’s quadrennial showpiece after claiming their fourth title in 2014. (Only Brazil has more.)

With Friday’s win, the USA is off to the business end of the World Cup for the fourth straight time. Sure, that doesn’t include 2018, when the U.S. failed to get to the tournament at all, snapping a streak that dated to 1990. But they made history on Friday by clinching a place in the last 32 early; never before had their fate been decided before the final contest of the opening round.

2. Americans Create Their Own Luck — Again

Getting the first goal in this game was always going to be hugely important for either team. And just like in their tournament opening 4-1 win over Paraguay last week, the visitors were dangerous early, pressuring U.S. center backs Tim Ream and Chris Richards with abandon. But it was the home team that struck first again thanks to another own goal, this time by Socceroos center back Cameron Burgess. They became the only team in the almost 100-year history of the competition to profit from own goals in consecutive World Cup games.

3. Alex Freeman Makes His Mark

Just over a year ago, the soccer-playing son of Super Bowl winner and Green Bay Packers great Antonio Freeman had never made an appearance for the senior USA squad. But in his first season as a regular starter for Orlando City in MLS, the 6-foot-2 fullback caught the eye of U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino and his staff, became a starter for the national team, and never looked back, ending 2025 with his first two international goals in a World Cup tune-up win over two time champions Uruguay and moving to Spanish power and UEFA Champions League mainstay Villarreal over the winter.

On Friday, he took a bow on the biggest stage in sports, scoring the second American goal just before halftime.

4. Take A Bow, Seattle

In sports as in life, reality surpasses fantasy. But for a city that had been waiting more than 50 years to host the U.S. at a World Cup — men’s or women’s — Friday’s game and the lead up to blew whatever lofty exceptions there were beforehand straight out of Puget Sound.

This scene in Seattle was hard to describe. From Pike Place to Pioneer Square, the Emerald City was awash with USA jerseys from every era. There were also plenty of yellow Australia shirts to be seen around town and in the grandiose, almost 70,000-seat downtown arena, with visiting supporters taking up a huge area behind one of the goals and in a sprawling corner in the far reaches of the upper deck.

The atmosphere they created was off the charts. And, as predicted by the U.S. players on the eve of the contest, the overwhelming pro-American crowd played a major role in willing the World Cup co-hosts to another unforgettable victory on home soil.

US Open: LIV Golf’s Joaquin Niemann surprised by ‘serious misconduct’ penalty for throwing golf club at Shinnecock Hills | Golf News

Joaquin Niemann insists he is “going to learn” from being handed a two-shot penalty at the US Open, although was surprised by the severity of the punishment for throwing a golf club.

The Chilean was level-par for his round with four holes to play on Thursday evening when he sent two tee shots out of bounds at the par-four sixth, moments before play was suspended due to darkness at Shinnecock Hills.

Niemann found more thick grass with his next effort before hacking the following shot – his sixth – onto the fairway, then threw a sand wedge in frustration before returning the following morning to hit his approach onto the green and two-putt for a quintuple-bogey nine.

The 27-year-old was punished for “serious misconduct” under rule 1.2b, seeing his nine become a septuple-bogey 11 in an opening-round 78, with Niemann only informed of the penalty shortly before his second round.

“I finished my round this morning, signed my scorecard, and then a referee came up to me and said, ‘I need to talk to you’,” Niemann told reporters after his second round.

“I knew I had a misbehaviour but I feel like everybody had some, and it’s never going to be anything major like two-shot penalty.

“They considered with the whole committee that it was a right decision to give me a two-shot penalty. Obviously I was trying to argue back, to try to not get the two-shot penalty, but it’s their decision.

“I feel like I wouldn’t be happy seeing players throwing clubs and behaving that way so, yeah, I agree. I’m the first one to judge myself when I don’t behave on the golf course – that was a misbehave from my part.

“I felt like a little bit extra penalised with a two-shot penalty, but it is what it is. I’m going to learn from it.”

Niemann is 10 strokes behind halfway leader Wyndham Clark, who extended his advantage with a monster final-hole birdie on Friday

Niemann later added: “They blew the horn [to suspend play for bad light] but after I hit that shot, all the frustration came inside me. Had my club in my hand and I couldn’t resist to throw it away. There was no-one there but I’m not proud of it.”

He responded brilliantly to post five birdies in the first six holes of his second round, where he joined Collin Morikawa in equalling the lowest score of the morning wave with a five-under 65.

It [penalty] definitely helped me a little bit to have a better round today,” Niemann added. “Everything was on. I hit great tee shots. I went out with a pretty aggressive mindset, so it worked out.

“Sometimes, especially in these tournaments, it could go the other way, and this time it worked.”

Rule 1.2a – the expected standards of player conduct

It declares that players are expected to play in the spirit of the game by acting with integrity, showing consideration to others and taking good care of the course.

It unequivocally states the Committee’s authority to disqualify a player for any serious misconduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game.

In place of the unclear previous concept of “breach of etiquette”, it uses the more direct and stronger phrases “misconduct” and “serious misconduct.”

Rule 1.2b also gives the Committee authority to adopt its own Code of Conduct and to set penalties for its breach.

What is the rule and who has been punished before?

Incidents that are considered a breach of conduct include unacceptable language and abuse of clubs or the course, with Niemann’s punishment the latest attempt by golf’s governing bodies to clamp down on bad behaviour.

The Masters used it for the first time on Sergio Garcia earlier this year, after the Spaniard slammed his club into the turf twice and broke his driver by swinging it at a water cooler during the final round.

Sergio Garcia was spoken to by a tournament official after the former Masters champion lashed out at the tee box during his final round at Augusta National

The policy used at The Masters sees players start with getting a warning, with a second violation then resulting in a two-shot penalty before a third leads to disqualification.

The USGA policy for serious misconduct says if a player’s behaviour – or that of his caddie – is “so far removed from what is expected in the spirit of the game of golf”, officials can assess a two-shot penalty or disqualify the player.

A statement from the USGA said: “Joaquin Niemann was assessed two penalty strokes for throwing a club on the sixth hole during Round 1. This act was determined to be serious misconduct under Rule 1.2b.”
